Holy Communion, Not First - Sunday, May 5 at 10am
On Sunday, May 5 we will celebrate our second "Holy Communion, Not First" during the 10am service in recent memory. Our Sunday School students will be learning more about the Eucharist during classes in the month of April. On Sunday, April 28, Father Jerry will teach Sunday School. Because the Episcopal Church sees Baptism as the only sacrament of initiation into the Christian Church, children may receive the bread and wine at any time. We typically allow parents to decide the right timing for their children. For some families having a formal "milestone" marking of Holy Eucharist is important; so we will once again celebrate what Father Jerry names "Holy Communion, Not First" last year. At least three students will be participating in this beautiful ritual and will stand at altar on Sunday, May 5 along with our clergy.
Good Shepard Sunday - Sunday, April 21
Join us on Sunday, April 21 as we join the greater Christian Church in celebrating The Feast of the Good Shepherd. You might also see some sheep (you know the ones from our Christmas Pageant) around the Sanctuary. How many will you find? Perhaps none since Rev. Katherine is leading services.
Flowering the Cross - Second Sunday of Easter, April 7 at 10am Service
Join us on Sunday, April 7 as we "flower the cross," turning a symbol of pain and suffering into one of rebirth and renewal. Please bring any type of flower or greenery.
While some churches "flower the cross" on Easter Sunday, it's been a long tradition at Holy Spirit (which we return to since Pandemic) to embrace this tradition on the Second Sunday of Easter.
At the end of the service, we'll bring the cross outside as further witness that Christ is Risen! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

The most dramatic worship service of the year! Join us on Thursday, March 28 at 7:30pm for our Maundy Thursday worship service. The conclusion of the service is the dramatic stripping of the altar and the procession of the reserved sacrament into our historic Chapel. We also keep vigil all night during our night watch which concludes on the morning of Good Friday.

Lent Madness 2024 - Vote For Your Favorite Saint
What is it? Lent Madness began in 2010 as the brainchild of the Rev. Tim Schenck (Rector at St. John the Evangelist in Hingham, MA). In seeking a fun, engaging way for people to learn about the men and women comprising the Church’s Calendar of Saints, Tim came up with this unique Lenten devotion.
How do I vote? go to: www.lentmadness.org. There are celebrity bloggers who write information through this Lenten Journey. You vote online and everything you need is there.
How does it work? The format is straightforward: 32 saints are placed into a tournament-like single elimination bracket. Each pairing remains open for a set period of time and people vote for their favorite saint. 16 saints make it to the Round of the Saintly Sixteen; eight advance to the Round of the Elate Eight; four make it to the Faithful Four; two to the Championship; and the winner is awarded the coveted Golden Halo. The first round consists of basic biographical information about each of the 32 saints. Things get a bit more interesting in the subsequent rounds as we offer quotes and quirks, explore legends, and even move into the area of saintly kitsch.

At our Food Pantry on Saturday, October 28, shoppers will be required to provide photo identification. We will allow one person per household to shop, and we will only accept residents of ESSEX COUNTY.

Yes, it's another year without a Pancake Supper. Although previously advertised for Tuesday, February 13, we will NOT be able to host a Pancake Supper this year. The ongoing water issues in our lower level kitchen would make hosting a Pancake Supper very challenging, so we'll look to 2025.
We do however feel both BINGO and Food Pantry WILL continue each month unless otherwise noted on our website calendar. If you have any questions, please email our Church Office.

Pre-Advent - What is that? Another word Father Jerry made up?
At Holy Spirit Verona we share in three weeks of "Pre-Advent" -- the three Sundays between All Saints and Advent 1. During this time, we encourage you to take an intentional “pause” before the waiting and preparing of Advent. Advent used to be seven weeks, up until the 7th century, and there is a small movement within the Church to return to that (see theadventproject.org). Many of the scripture readings and prayers after All Saints give a hint or lean towards Advent, so Father Jerry says... why not just go there!
Yes, we all know Father Jerry loves Advent. We are not bringing forth Christmas early like many retailers do, but rather allowing an intentional time to PAUSE before the all-consuming month of December. These three weeks of Pre-Advent (beginning November 12), we hope, will bring forth a level of preparation and space during Advent which will make Christmas that much more meaningful. Our first experience of Pre-Advent was in 2018, so it's now officially a tradition! We get to see the blue hangings, which are symbolic of the Blessed Mother, for just a few extra weeks. Find some space these next three weeks to do something that will set you up well for the entrance of the Christ-child into our midst yet again. Join us as we prepare to prepare!

7th Anniversary of our Food Pantry - Sunday, April 23
This photo was taken on Sunday, April 17, 2016; the Sunday School students helped Father Jerry and parishioner/benefactor Cardie Mortimer bless the pantry and it's contents in preparation for our first Distribution Day on Saturday, April 23, 2016. On that day we provided assistance to 18 families. Today, seven years later, we help over 140 families each month.
This Sunday, April 23, during our worship services (at both 8am and 10am), we will mark and celebrate the seventh anniversary of this life giving ministry.

Mike Carlucci Memorial Pancake Supper - Tuesday, February 21 at 5:30pm
On Tuesday, February 21, 2023 from 5:30-7pm we will host the Mike Carlucci Memorial Pancake Supper. All are invited. We have not hosted an open-to-the-public pancake supper since 2020. In addition, in his time at Holy Spirit, Mike was a Sunday School Teacher, he preached on several Sundays during worship, was on Vestry, mowed the lawn, volunteered in our Food Pantry, shopped for inventory for the Food Pantry, and the list goes on and on.
The cost for the event is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-12; under age six is free. Proceeds from this event will be earmarked for youth activities, possibly a Mission Trip. You may pay at the door or pre-pay on our website or via Venmo: Holy Spirit Verona @Jerry-Racioppi-2 [6663]. For more information email [email protected].

Katherine for additional information.
Quiet Eucharist Returns on January 8
Each Sunday we offer an 8am Quiet Eucharist in our historic Chapel. For Christmas Day (December 25) and New Years' Day (January 1), both Sundays, we will not offer an 8am Service. We encourage you to consider joining the 10am Choral Eucharist in-person or online both of these days.
Spiritual Enrichment Group: Advent and ee cummings
Beginning Sunday, November 27, our Spiritual Enrichment Group (at 11:45am via Zoom -- same link as Sunday Worship) will be studying a series of poems related to Advent and Christmas by E.E. Cummings, the son of a pastor and a thoughtful theologian in his own right. Cummings’ poems call us to keep awake, watch, and wait for God to arrive on Christmas morning. Week by week, simple candlelight services and weekly practices will help us read, reflect, sing, and prepare – all for the sake of deepening the joys of the season. Join us for all four Sundays of Advent or any that work for your schedule. For more information and/or a copy of the booklet, please contact Rev. Katherine or Patti Walsh.
